CALYX GARDEN

The Calyx garden is a key resource for our hands-on- demonstrations. The garden is situated on the Caribbean Island of Jamaica, in a residential community 2,060 above sea level.  It is approximately 7,500 sq. ft (700 sq m), spread across 5 sections around the home.

Given the elevation, we enjoy a mild tropical climate with annual temperatures ranging between 66 – 85 degrees F.  However, Relative Humidity is high, with heavy dew most mornings – which means we’re prone to mildews and other fungal problems.  Annual rainfall averages 65 inches (1600 mm).

We experience two wet seasons: mid-April to mid-June; and October/November.  We capture much of this water in a 15,000-gallon tank which serves both the garden and the home. The dry season occurs between December and February.

We grow a wide range of vegetables, fruits, and tropical ornamental plants.  Presently, we are concentrating our efforts on Amaryllis.

Amaryllis are very popular seasonal plant gifts in North America, Europe, Australia and elsewhere but, they are not well known in warmer climates. For this reason, Calyx decided to develop the protocols for growing this crop in the Caribbean and introducing it to the market as a ‘special occasion’ plant gift option.

Over the past 3 years we have collected several varieties, studied their growth and blooming habits and shared results on our YouTube channel.  We will be introducing six varieties for sale starting in December 2023.

Please check our Amaryllis store for more information
